The Efkrantis 2020 Award "Total Contribution to Shipping" this year was awarded to Leonidas Dimitriades - Eugenides, President of the Eugenides Foundation and IMO Maritime Goodwill Ambassador in Greece.

The Efkrantis Awards are organized every year by the “Nautical Chronicles” and highlight the leading personalities of Shipping. This year the award ceremony took place at the Hellenic Navy Academy on Thursday 15 July 2021.

The jury, whose members represent shipping world, selected those who stand out in 2020 at sea and on land. Among them Mr. Leonidas Dimitriades - Eugenides, was honored for his overall contribution to Shipping. Leonidas Dimitriades - Eugenides course in shipping begins in 1976, as an executive at the Eugenides Group of companies, after completing his studies in Economics at the Athens Law School and in Transport Economics (MSc) at the PCL in London. In 1995 was appointed CEO of the Group. Since 2005, he has been active in coastal shipping, continuing at the same time the group’s services in sea going shipping.

At the same time, he is characterized by his dynamic behavior in the representation processes of Greek shipping. In 1996 he was elected for the first time as member of the Hellenic Shipowners’ Association and from 2003 to 2012 he served as Treasurer. He has represented the Association at the international organization UNCTAD (United Nations Conference on Trade and Development) and at the same time is also a member of the Chartered Institute of Transport and Logistics M.C.I.T. and the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers.

In 2015 he was awarded by the Academy of Athens for the outstanding operation of the Planetarium of the Eugenides Foundation, which is one of the largest and best equipped digital planetariums in the world.

For the contribution of the Eugenides Foundation, for the past decades, in the field of technology and especially maritime education, Leonidas Dimitriades - Eugenides was awarded in June 2018 with an Honorary Doctorate degree of the Department of Maritime Studies of the School of Shipping and Industry of the University of Piraeus.

Since May 2018, Leonidas Dimitriades - Eugenides serves as IMO Maritime Goodwill Ambassador in Greece. His objective is to inform and attract young people to the maritime and seafaring professions, as well as to raise awareness of the benefits of such a career choice. The IMO Ambassador also seeks to attract a new audience and inspire a new generation of professionals.

The members of the jury of the Efkrantis Awards attributed to Leonidas Dimitriades - Eugenides the excellent management of the Eugenides Foundation and the organization of a variety of training and educational activities, as well as the support in every way of maritime and technical education in our country. His words "We support, and we are supported by the new generation of our country" reveal, according to the jury of the awards, the relationship that he and the Eugenides Foundation have developed with the young people of Greece: a relationship with deep roots in the past, a stable present, and a hopeful future. Particularly important is also his contribution to the strategy of the Foundation, which reflects the real needs of society in matters of education and training.

The committee honors him for his diverse and generous work, which makes him a genuine continuer of the vision of the national benefactor Eugene Eugenides, his sister Marianthi Simou, and Nikolaos Vernikos-Eugenides. When he received the award, Mr. Leonidas Dimitriades - Eugenides, was very excited and thanked the "Nautical Chronicles", organizer of the Efkrantis Awards and Elias Bisias, as well as the members of the jury. He specifically mentioned "Thank you for honoring me with this award, thank you for your beautiful words, but above all thank you, for being members of the Greek shipping “family” and together we sail towards the future". He continued stressing "I always thought it was self-evident that from whatever position you are in life, you have the obligation to offer to your country. The mentors in my life were my family members, my uncle Nikos Vernikos-Eugenides, my mother my father. I owe them a big thank you". Concluding Mr. Leonidas Dimitriades - Eugenides underlined:" Shipping in Greece has a past, present and future. And I have confidence in the new generation"
