2nd and 3rd grade of Gymnasium, 2nd grade of Lyceum
Introduction to matter and its properties.
Students discuss the basic principles of atomic theory and familiarize themselves with the concepts of atoms, molecules, elements and chemical compounds. They observe all states of matter under different conditions, as well as some of their properties.
The concepts of chemical properties and chemical reactions are discussed and presented through interesting experiments. Furthermore, in accordance with the school curriculum, students explore the chemistry of solutions using simple materials such as milk and black ink.
Finally, the concept of pH is presented by exploring the use of different indicator solutions.
Additional experiments that highlight concepts as chemical equilibrium, catalysis, kinetics and oscillating chemical reactions are demonstrated to older students.
Topics Covered
- Atoms/molecules/ions.
- Elements/periodic table.
- States of matter.
- Properties of matter (physical/chemical).
- Mixtures and solutions.
- Measurement of pH and pH indicators.
- Catalysis.
- Equilibrium (*Lyceum).
- Kinetics (*Lyceum).
- Oscillating chemical reactions (*Lyceum).
