EPISODE PLOT
The third episode of the series “Scientists Who ‘Discovered’ for Humanity” is based on the life of Elizabeth Blackwell, the first woman in America to earn a medical degree, paving the way for women to enter a profession that had previously been strictly male-dominated. Elizabeth Blackwell was born in England in 1821. Although she started out as a teacher, she eventually turned to medicine. With the unwavering support of her progressive parents—and thanks to her own perseverance—she made her big dream come true despite the adversity she faced because of her gender. She dedicated her life to fighting social injustice through medicine, to the struggle for prevention, better treatment—as she saw it—as well as to defending women’s rights and advocating for equal opportunities for female doctors. He traveled to the United States and Europe, worked in hospitals and research centers, wrote books, and gave lectures. Her life and work served as a source of inspiration for many women, and she herself was a unique example of determination, courage, and meaningful contribution to society.
