The Eugenides Foundation has been a steadfast pillar of maritime education in Greece for the past 70 years, playing a leading role in this field over the years, thanks to a series of initiatives and activities. It was one of the first areas on which it focused, since as early as 1958, the Foundation established the Publications Committee for Maritime Education, which continues to operate today with the participation of officials from the Ministry of Maritime Affairs. Its purpose is to write textbooks for Merchant Marine Academies, which will also serve as educational resources for shipping industry personnel in general. For 70 years, the Eugenides Foundation has been publishing high-quality educational materials—its current catalog includes more than 65 titles, and it has published a total of 170 since its inception - fully meeting the needs of the Merchant Marine Academies.

Its contribution to maritime education is not limited to its publications. It participates in the development of the course syllabi at the Maritime Academies. It also provides financial support to various areas of maritime education through donations to upgrade the infrastructure and equipment of the Naval Academies, by providing scholarships for relevant studies to Coast Guard officers, by conducting studies and organizing conferences on maritime education, by providing access to maritime databases through its library, and by participating in major European maritime programs. It also made a significant financial contribution toward the purchase of the training sailboat “Eugene Eugenides,” which was used for many years to train Merchant Marine cadets.

Its pivotal role in maritime education has also been cemented by the fact that, over the past few decades, the Eugenides Foundation has become the Ministry of Shipping’s primary institutional partner on matters not only of maritime education but also, more broadly, of the Greek shipping industry. In this context, the Ministry of Maritime Affairs commissioned the Foundation to develop a strategy for a new institutional framework for maritime education and to identify the key areas of action for its implementation. The relevant report submitted by the Foundation serves as the basis for the development of the relevant legislative framework, which is currently being drafted by the Ministry of Shipping.

At the same time, the Foundation is leading the effort to digitally transform maritime education by developing digital educational tools and creating the conditions necessary for digital teaching to take place.

In recognition of its multifaceted and long-standing contribution to maritime education, the Eugenides Foundation was honored in 2016 with the “Achievement in Education or Training” award at the Lloyd’s Awards.
