An Introduction to Matter and Its Properties

A journey of discovery into the subject matter, for 9th-grade students, as well as students in all high school grades.

The course begins with an introduction to the fundamentals of atomic theory and an exploration of concepts such as atoms and molecules, elements, and chemical compounds. We learn about the properties of matter through fascinating phase-change experiments and see firsthand how a chemical reaction can serve as the “fingerprint” of a substance.

Next, we explore and become familiar with mixtures and solutions, and observe the separation of black ink into its components using the method of chromatography. We measure the pH of a solution in different ways and create “rainbows” in colorless solutions using red cabbage.

Especially for high school students, the collection of experiments is expanded to highlight the concepts of chemical equilibrium, catalysis, as well as chemical kinetics and oscillating chemical reactions.
