Conducting scientific studies and organizing conferences on maritime education

The Eugenides Foundation has conducted important scientific studies and organized conferences on maritime education.

In 2010, at the initiative of the Eugenides Foundation, the Department of Statistics at the Athens University of Economics and Business conducted an innovative study aimed at identifying the factors that influence students’ decision to pursue maritime education.

In this first nationwide survey, which was conducted among a sample of 7,000 12th-grade students, revealed a significant gap in students’ knowledge and understanding of the relationship between maritime education and the job market, despite the fact that Greece has historically enjoyed comparative advantages in the global shipping industry, where it holds a dominant position.

The Eugenides Foundation’s position was that it is necessary to inform young people about the significant contributions of the shipping industry to the country and the prospects for careers in the maritime sector. The Eugenides Foundation’s goal in conducting this study was to contribute to the creation of scientific tools that will assist all stakeholders in policy-making, to the extent that they wish to make use of these tools.

The results of the study are published here.

In 2012, the Eugenides Foundation, once again in collaboration with the Department of Statistics at the Athens University of Economics and Business, conducted a study to examine the status of Greece’s AENs based on students’ views; the findings of which were published in a book.

This survey documented for the first time the “voices of the students,” who expressed their views on the curriculum, the teaching staff, textbooks, technological infrastructure, campus facilities, and educational trips. The aim of this study was to highlight the problems that exist in maritime education, to seek ways to resolve them, and to provide those responsible with as complete a picture as possible of maritime education, as presented by the students, who are its primary recipients.

In 2014, the Eugenides Foundation organized a two-day conference on maritime education, with the theme: “Education at Merchant Marine Academies and on Ships,” which aimed to influence the direction of maritime education in order to improve and modernize it.

The conference was attended by all stakeholders involved in maritime education, with the aim of fostering a constructive exchange of views on the challenges currently facing maritime education in Greece.

The proceedings of this conference were also published as a book, and abstracts of the presentations are available in English.
