Communicating Astronomy to the Public 2007

This volume contains the proceedings of the conference “Communicating Astronomy with the Public 2007,” which was co-organized by the National Observatory of Athens and the Eugenides Planetarium from October 8 to 11, 2007, at the Eugenides Foundation (Athens, Greece). This conference aimed to bring together the producers of astronomical information (research scientists), public information officers (associated with large observatories and space missions), and mediators.

Eugene Eugenides and his associates

This book was written about the great philanthropist of the 20th century, Eugene Eugenides, based on biographical information provided by the Eugenides Foundation, its founder, and his successors. It was also based on information and recollections from friends and colleagues of Eugenios Eugenidis who are still alive, Marianna Simou, and Nikos Vernikos-Eugenides, as well as on articles in the Greek and international press and on sources from a relatively limited body of literature.

Proceedings of a Vocational Education Conference

This volume contains the proceedings of the vocational education conference titled “The Development of Technical Education in Our Region Over Time: "Problems and Prospects," organized by the Eugenides Foundation in May 2007. The conference was held to mark the 50th anniversary of the Eugenides Foundation, which has long contributed to technical and vocational education in Greece, and in conjunction with the implementation of a new policy for secondary technical and vocational education.

Documentation, Digitization, and Utilization of the Eugenides Foundation's Collections

The Eugenides Foundation participated in the “Information Society 2000–2006” operational program under the Third Community Support Framework (CSF) with a project aimed at cataloging, utilizing, and promoting its collections. The areas of the Eugenides Foundation that were included in the program were the writing and publication of textbooks in collaboration with the relevant ministries, the operation of a modern technical library, the Planetarium, and the Interactive Science and Technology Exhibition.

Engineering Mechanics—Strength of Materials

This book is intended for students at Higher Vocational Training Schools (SAEK), whose curriculum includes the courses “Mechanics—Strength of Materials” and “Strength of Materials.” This section describes the fundamental laws of mechanics governing translational and rotational motion, as well as the concepts of force, torque, and their resultants, work, energy, and power, and the conditions of equilibrium for a rigid body are analyzed. It also covers the basic concepts of Strength of Materials and presents the simple stresses of tension, compression, shear, bending, and torsion, the concept of combined stresses, as well as the phenomenon of buckling.
