For 70 years, education and the dissemination of scientific and technical knowledge have been at the heart of the Eugenides Foundation’s mission. Throughout this long journey, maritime education has held a special place, with the Eugenides Foundation continuously keeping pace with developments in shipping and updating the educational material that supports new generations of Merchant Marine officers from the very first stages of their training.

Continuing this longstanding commitment, this year the Eugenides Foundation is enriching the educational material it provides to students of the Merchant Marine Academies with 14 new and updated publications, reflecting the contemporary scientific, technological, technical, environmental and operational requirements of the shipping industry.

As Professor Ioannis Golias, Governor of the Eugenides Foundation, points out:

“For 70 years, the Eugenides Foundation has remained firmly committed to education and the dissemination of scientific and technical knowledge, with particular emphasis on maritime education and on preparing the young people who will go on to serve in Greek shipping. The publication and systematic updating of educational textbooks for the Merchant Marine Academies represent a substantial investment in the quality of education provided and in ensuring that it remains closely aligned with developments in the maritime sector. In an environment that is constantly evolving under the influence of technological innovation, new operational requirements and the need to protect the marine environment, providing students with access to up-to-date, reliable and scientifically sound educational material is essential. Through these 14 new and updated publications, the Eugenides Foundation continues to provide tangible support to maritime education, in close cooperation with the competent educational authorities and with a steadfast focus on the needs of the next generation of seafarers.”

With the aim of continuously updating the Eugenides Foundation’s maritime educational textbooks, its Publications Committee, following the established annual review of the 68 educational textbooks for Deck and Engineering Officers, and in close cooperation with the Directorate of Seafarers’ Training of the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy and the Eugenides Foundation’s Publications Department, has this year proceeded with the preparation and publication of 2 new titles and 12 updated editions for Merchant Marine Academy students.

More specifically, students at the Merchant Marine Academies for Engineers will be introduced, through the new textbook Steam Turbines, to the operating principles and main components of steam turbines, steam flow, power, efficiency and consumption, as well as the fundamental procedures for inspection, monitoring, maintenance, dry-docking and troubleshooting. The other new title, Electrical Circuit Theory, presents the fundamental principles of electricity and the operation of electrical circuits, covering direct and alternating current, basic circuit components and circuit-solving methods, electromagnetism and electromagnetic induction, as well as electrical measuring instruments and the fundamental techniques for their use.

Students at the Merchant Marine Academies for Engineers will also receive updated editions of Internal Combustion Engines – Volume I, which covers the theory and operation of reciprocating marine diesel engines, with particular emphasis on modern fuels, lubrication and the current environmental protection framework, and Digital Systems – Computer Networks, which presents the fundamental automation and networking technologies used on modern vessels, with emphasis on system control and monitoring, safety and the early detection of faults.

For students at the Merchant Marine Academies for Deck Officers, a new, fully updated edition of the second volume of Navigation is being published. Navigation II provides a comprehensive guide to the theory and practice of navigation, covering celestial navigation, tides and tidal currents, as well as great-circle sailing. At the same time, it presents modern digital tools and methods for position fixing and voyage planning.

Another fully updated title for the Merchant Marine Academies for Deck Officers is Seamanship, which presents the fundamental principles of ship organisation and operation, with particular emphasis on maritime safety and operational readiness. It covers crew responsibilities, emergency response procedures, and the use of life-saving and firefighting equipment.

Also being released in new editions for the Merchant Marine Academies for Deck Officers are Ship Security Officer, focusing on the duties of the SSO and the implementation of the ISPS Code, and Communications II, which covers modern maritime communication systems, the GMDSS, conventional and satellite communication systems, and the LRIT system.

The new editions also include Ship Inspections, which presents the main control and inspection procedures carried out by the crew, Port State Control authorities and Classification Societies, as well as Vetting and SIRE 2.0 inspections, and Marine Environmental Protection, which focuses on MARPOL 73/78, contemporary environmental challenges facing the shipping industry, and the role of digital innovation and the human factor in protecting the marine environment.

The textbooks Pumps (2nd edition) and ILO – Accident Prevention on Board Ship at Sea and in Port have also been published with less extensive, but nevertheless all necessary, revisions.

Finally, this year marks the first publication of the Onboard Training Record Books for the Deck Department and the Onboard Training Record Books for the Engine Department in bilingual editions (Greek–English), designed to meet the needs of students undertaking their sea training on vessels sailing under either the Greek or a foreign flag.
