TheEugenides Foundationparticipated in the “Greek-French Dialogues” on the topic “Diplomacy in the Age of Geopolitical Realignments—In the Footsteps of Alexander Karatheodoris,” which took place in Orestiada, bringing together prominent figures from the academic, diplomatic, and institutional spheres of Greece and France. 

The “Greek-French Dialogues” were attended by the President of the Eugenides Foundation, Leonidas Dimitriadis-Eugenides, and the Director of the Eugenides Foundation, Professor Ioannis Golias, participated in a public dialogue on contemporary geopolitical developments, European strategic autonomy, energy security, and the new challenges of the green transition.

The President of the Eugenides Foundation, Leonidas Dimitriadis-Eugenides, referred to the major geopolitical shifts that are shaping the new international reality, noting that security is no longer solely a military issue, but also encompasses energy, technology, the economy, and shipping. As he pointed out, “geography is returning to the center of international politics,” with sea lanes, energy routes, and critical infrastructure increasingly determining international power and influence.

He made special mention of the strategic importance of the Eastern Mediterranean and of Greek-French cooperation, noting that Greece and France share a common understanding of the need to strengthen European strategic autonomy, maritime security, and energy stability. At the same time, he emphasized the pivotal role of Thrace as a region connecting Europe with the Balkans, the Eastern Mediterranean, and the Middle East.

For his part, the Director of the Eugenides Foundation, Professor Ioannis Golias, highlighted the connection between the environment and geopolitics, noting that climate adaptation, energy autonomy, and the protection of critical resources are now becoming issues of strategic importance for nations and the international balance of power.

As he pointed out, “the key challenge for Europe is the transition from green rhetoric to green power,” emphasizing that the environmental dimension can now become a factor in security, resilience, and international influence.

The Commander, Prof. Gkolias also emphasized that environmental challenges no longer concern only the future of the planet, but directly affect the economy, energy, security, and geopolitical stability. “The environment takes on real significance when it is linked to the strategic interests of nations,” he noted, pointing out that the green transition is becoming a critical arena for international competition and cooperation.
