The "Mediterranean Sea" workshop, developed by the Oceanographic Institute of Monaco, is a collaborative and participatory program addressed to students. Through an interactive approach, participants discover the geographical features, biodiversity, and pressures affecting this semi-enclosed sea. They are invited to reflect collectively on environmental, economic, and social challenges and to propose concrete solutions for the sustainable coexistence of human activities and nature conservation. The workshop pays particular attention to the role of marine protected areas and aims to promote a common vision and a call to action.

A total of 8 workshops will be offered to students (lasting 1.5 hours per half-class, i.e. approximately 15 students) by a Greek coordinator provided by Explorations de Monaco.

Ages: 12 to 16 years old. Students must be accompanied by their teachers throughout the workshop.

Duration: 1.5 hours per half-class.

The workshop and guided tour of the exhibition for schools can be conducted in Greek or English.

Workshop description :

A group of about fifteen students sits around a large table on which an A1 map of the Mediterranean basin has been placed. They are given A6 maps.

  1. Mediterranean identity card (20 minutes):

This workshop begins with a presentation on the Mediterranean Sea.

- How many countries border the Mediterranean Sea?

- What are the special characteristics of this sea?

- What are the different seas that make it up?

- How deep is it?

The aim of the first part of the workshop is to make students aware that this sea plays an important role in our daily lives.

  1. Discovering four emblematic species (1 hour):

The students then take on the role of expert biologists and share their knowledge of four emblematic species of the Mediterranean:

- The seal

- Posidonia

- The brown meagre

- The whale

Participants discover how these species live (habitat, lifestyle, reproduction), examine the threats they face, and discuss solutions for their conservation.

Throughout this workshop, the facilitator encourages students to reflect, discuss, and learn with the aim of realizing that marine protected areas with a high level of protection are among the most effective solutions for species conservation.
